Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
