RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
