EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In related judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to reduce security grants to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the case was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, following concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
