No fewer than thirteen individuals killed and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was suggested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
