Prime Television Choices: 7 Essential Films In the Days Ahead

Pick of the Week

The Substance Film

Director Coralie Fargeat's daring commentary tackles the demanding standards for female beauty along with the perceived horrors of growing older. Demi Moore delivers an inspired portrayal playing Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress demoted to starring in a fitness program on television. Forced aside thanks to her deceitful superior Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to a secretive and terrifying process called the Substance. This creates a new version of herself called Sue, resulting in a steadily more toxic connection between the two. October 17th, the streaming service Paramount+

This Mystery Thriller

This Agatha Christie-esque mystery stars Knightley playing Laura, a skilled journalist who opts for some time off from reporting on global conflict to join a luxury cruise accompanied by an ailing Norwegian shipping heiress and donor, her husband, as well as other affluent passengers. Yet once a mysterious woman goes overboard one night and all passengers insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts awaken. Available now, on Netflix

Presence

The acclaimed director pushes his directorial skills through this nifty paranormal narrative shot entirely from the viewpoint of the spirit. As a family including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their fresh home, the filming device – AKA the Presence – shadows their actions. Chloe seems aware of the ghostly being, and it seems defensive toward her. But why? This is an entertaining concept that remains concise, including a revelation that could catch you off guard. October 11th, multiple showings, Sky Cinema

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Cage wholeheartedly adopts his unique fame via this autobiographical spoof. He acts as a self-obsessed Hollywood actor called Nicolas Cage who accepts a lucrative offer to attend a festive event in Mallorca for billionaire superfan Javi. Contacted by the CIA to spy on the suspected cartel boss, his unconventional method is put to the test. This Saturday, evening, Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

The director's claustrophobic thriller holds up well even without a sequel. Located in 1970s Colorado, a series of kidnappings has left the local kids anxious. After Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and held captive in a cellar, he anticipates a fatal end. Yet the non-functional line in the room keeps ringing, with spooky callers providing assistance, while the intuitive nightmares from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. An effective horror. October 11th, 10.50pm, on Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the battle between spirituality and money, it's a knockout win for greed in Showalter's wonderfully garish film adaptation regarding the shamed religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. The actor portrays the greedy Jim, who proclaims at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals set about monetising the nation's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, overdone appearance and insincerity, yet Chastain manages to present the character in a likable light. Next Tuesday, late night, on Film4

Black Bag

This week's another release from Steven Soderbergh is a intelligence thriller as sharp like the turtlenecks worn by Fassbender's British agent. His assignment is to identify a mole among the team from five suspects – including is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are experts of deadpan cool, so a delicious psychological game of truth or lie unfolds. The supporting cast participate the clever spy entertainment. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
