The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and distinctive moments – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of multiple weeks, the American president commenced revealing the public his plans for a lavish reception room two times larger compared to the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing portion to build it.
He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of fatalities due to his slashing to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and increasing, and this week research predicted his energy policies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have risked – really, no other president would have conceived – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the presidential residence to build a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which maintain dealings with the government.
We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' to 'the humble will perish of cholera'
As disorienting as it is to witness the leader attempt to overturn the old idea about democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment within America who might not perceive it completely novel. That is those of us – within elder demographics close to half – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have observed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we were raised with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of compassion into a symbol of hate who blesses precisely the cruelties that he condemned in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more slowly, over decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disturbing via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground
Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus from my childhood, as conceptually Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and given that the rapidly expanding group among Americans might have little sense regarding him since they are atheists or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; but I do think that there are pearls of great price in the Christian story.
It is unquestionably not the narrative of an authoritative monarch arising; rather, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to avoid covert authorities. The infant develops in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his message concerns compassion for others, particularly for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and housing. Christ's response to violence is to offer the additional cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a method to educate the assailant; his method regarding offenses is that if someone steals your coat you must offer him your sweater too.
The evident and direct reality that Christ from scripture advocates for a form of extreme compassion centered on the poor has consistently rendered the Christian faith somewhat of a controversial faith: engaging for the masses, but because of its intrinsic extremism demanding to be contained. In the 1950s it was contained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Conflict for the Highest Within Us
So I have been encouraged to observe the steadfast resistance regarding Trump develop in this past year. It has served as substantial consolation to participate in developing the movement that has demonstrated publicly via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged voters to turn out in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We shall require to maintain it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners throughout each rally and appeals to the highest qualities in US history.
We will be questioned ... about how you treated the immigrant? Did you receive him and receive them or not?
America is best defended, essentially, through connection to the best about American history, similar to Christianity is most protected through connection to that which renders it unique and beautiful, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In neither case does it suggest feigning the most negative about the nation and religious tradition never occurred; it signifies both modesty and belief, a blend that genuine American Christians should be comfortable with.
