This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like typical biological terror, but inside Together exists a deep contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
