Officers mentioned they were contacted by a resident who noticed a car in Hanau smeared with reddish substance

Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.

Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.

Law enforcement report they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.

The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.

Law enforcement then found multiple other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Police state preliminary tests show the substance was likely blood from a person.

"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; investigators are currently not informed of any harm in association with the event," they added.

Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to unravel the case" and have asked to the community for information.

A high-ranking representative said the incident made him speechless and needed to be addressed promptly.

"This event hits the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on social media, recalling the murder of nine victims by a gunman targeting people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
